Hello all! Welcome to the first post. :)
This will be just a short, introductory idea of what I'll be doing for the next month (June 21-July 18).
It all began with my love of anthropology and traveling, which turned into a sputtering, tongue-tied, doe-eyed, rambling application on Professor Catherine Besteman's desk. Each year, the Anthropology Department at Colby College gives students the funds to attend archaeology schools anywhere in the Americas through the Elfrieda Frank Scholarship (if you are at Colby and even remotely interested in archaeology or any of the topics to be mentioned, please look into it!!!). I was notified in early March that I would be the recipient of one of these scholarships--meaning I had a month's worth of tuition, lodging, travel, and food all covered. I jumped with glee for a solid five hours (and have the legs muscles to prove it).
I then had to actually apply to an archaeology school. The stars aligned and not a month later the Institute for Field Research had accepted me into one of their program, called Mexico - Ethnohistorical Archaeology (click for details!). In sum, I will be exploring southern Mexico (mostly the state of Oaxaca) to learn more about pre-colonial history, indigenous cultures, archaeology, art history, and ethnography. If you are really interested (or feeling stalker-ish), feel free to check out the syllabus for more details and a day-by-day itinerary!
As I write, I have only 2 more days until departure (on Father's Day...what a horrible Father's Day present...sorry Dad), but I can't wait. The leaders of this program seem incredibly nice and well connected (apparently we will be going to some high level dig sites!). They also said I would have plenty of chances to speak Spanish (conjugations, don't fail me now). I am so excited to go!!!
That's all for now, but I look forward to telling you more soon!
Peace and love,
Abby
PS. If you need to reach me, Facebook Messenger is your best bet! But if you are feeling long winded, you can email me at asnyder244@gmail.com. :)
