[ From the Depths of Caves to the Peaks of Pyramids ]

This post spans from Sunday to Tuesday, so there is a bit to cover!
Sunday we left Huatulco and began the drive for Oaxaca City. Along the way, we stopped at Guiengola, which is a Zapotec archaeological site. It was a beautiful 4 hour hike! It had the red painted rocks and green cacti everywhere. The site itself was incredibly well preserved, too; we even got to go in a cave and burial sites!

It's difficult to tell in the picture, but this was a ballcourt!

(I’m also in love with all the hills in the valley of Oaxaca.)

The next day we took a tour around the city, including a visit to the two main cathedrals. That afternoon we had class in a convent (after another tour) and finished the front side of Codex Nuttall!

Tuesday was a big day because we visited two major archaeological sites! The first was Monte Albán, which some consider to be the head of the Zapotec empire (if there really was an empire). It was beautiful and picture perfect!

This is a fully excavated and mostly reconstructed ballcourt!

These are reconstructed, but it gives you an idea of the pictures we are interpreting!

We then went to a nearby hill, atop which was the ruins of Atzompa! It isn't as significant, but it is pretty freshly excavated so we were some of the first outsiders to see it.

Look how pretty the flowers are!

We were all exhausted after so much walking/hiking/climbing around, so we had the rest of the day off! It has been incredible, though, seeing Oaxaca City. I really love it and could see myself working here!

Paz y amor,
Abby
