This morning we began by driving to Teotitlán del Valle to see a spinning demonstration. A man showed us around the shop that he and
his family work in, mostly weaving rugs! They were all beautiful, and I ended
up with one to put in my dorm (I’m sooo jazzed about it. It’s going to brighten
the whole place up!). He showed us all the different natural dyes that they
use, from cochineal to marigolds to indigo, as well as the traditional looms
that they create the rugs on.
| Mine is mostly cochineal with traditional Zaptotec designs!! |
After that, we went to a mescal factory. Mezcal is a cousin
to tequila, and Oaxaca is known for being the best at it! They showed us the
whole process, and we got to try some of the thirty different flavors (the 5
year and pistachio are the best in my opinion!).
Then, we went into town and checked out the community
museum. A lot of towns have their own museums, which is super neat.
We met up
with Nancy and her husband for lunch, and we had these delicious pink tamales. :)
They also showed us around their house, which is compound style like the pre-Hispanic
Zapotecs would have lived.
Around 3 pm, it was finally festival time! We headed to the
town square and watched some dances while being bombarded by the papas.
| Apparently we're getting married. |
During one of the breaks, we went to the roof of the church and looked around! It then started raining and after the first crack of thunder we scuttled back down.
Paz y amor,
Abby
